Growing Up

So I graduated a few weeks ago with a First, which I am pretty proud of. Here I am receiving a piece of paper reminding me to pay any library fines if i want to get my degree, thanks UCA. I have also moved to a beautiful flat in Crystal Palace, and starting next week I will officially be a BBC employee, working on the next series of Toughest Place To Be.

It seems weird that everything has happened so quickly, doesn’t really feel real. I don’t think it has fully sunk in yet that I have made it. I am going to keep my blog here although I doubt I will be updating it regularly. Hopefully I will get a chance over the next few months to work on some of my own things, got a few ideas in the pipeline, a doc and a few art pieces. In the meantime, I am trying to read my way through the ultimate book list! And you can follow my progress on blogspot (http://austen-to-zola.blogspot.co.uk/)

So, the inevitable has happened, uni has ended and we have been let out into the real world. Now I had planned on calling myself a student until graduation but unbelievably, I have found myself a job! I was working on Big Earth’s Extreme Frontiers: South Africa (http://www.bigearth.com/extremefrontiers/south-africa/) for a week as a production assistant, but while was there I was offered a job in development and research - very excited. Just need to find somewhere in London to move to and I will be a fully fledged grown up.

I also got the final marks for my degree back. 1st Class Hons. That’ll do.

Final hand in next Monday for our Graduation Film, and Professional Practices - a unit preparing us for life in the outside world of film (supposedly). Then that is uni finished. Terrified!

Languages Through Lenses

Marcus and I applied for funding to make a 90 second animation called ‘Hello, Bonjour’ as part of Languages Through Lenses. We were lucky enough to be one of 15 groups chosen to take part in the competition, which means we will be funded $5000 to make the film over the summer.

It also meant we got to attend a 3 day development workshop in Amsterdam which, as well as being a chance to meet other young film makers from across the EU, was an opportunity to receive feedback and advice from top industry professionals.The discussions on character progression in the short form really helped us to develop our storytelling skills and we are looking forward to getting on with ‘Hello, Bonjour’ over the summer.

Gosh, I have been ignoring tumblr again, lots has been happening, will make a few uploads over the next couple of days to try and catch up. The reason I have been neglecting my blog, not that I have ever been great at updating regularly, but more than usual is that I have been shooting my graduation film. It is now well into the edit and we think, starting to come together. I will have more information about it in due course. For now here are some pictures I took on a recent recce to Portavogie, a location for a documentary I have in the pipelines.

The last few weeks have been a blur of activity. Finished the doc and after a struggle we came up with a name - Life Regardless - still a few things I might tweak after feedback but pretty damn happy with what I achieved, shows what can be done when you really put your mind to something. Should have a copy online soon enough, mail me if you want to check it out. Straight after that I had to finish my dissertation, which was surprisingly fun, although the proof reading got a little tedious. And somewhere in the middle I managed to squeeze in an exciting week of work experience on Just Ate by Beachflea Productions.

So now onto the next project, keep your eyes peeled, will have information about it very shortly!

After a much needed relax over Christmas, I am back in Farnham and attempting to start my sound edit, although being some what held up by a simultaneous ear and eye infection (great timing!) I am quite proud of my workstation set up though, what do you think?

After locking myself away in my room to edit for a week and a half, I finally resurfaced for a break early last week. I quickly got pulled into my flatmates film shoot, AD’ing for them on Tuesday, and feeding their actress Monday - Friday, and have spend the last few days doing a mixture of dissertation research and budget planning for our big film next semester, so my Dystonia Doc has been slightly pushed out of my mind. As I have promised my tutor that I will have a rough draft of my dissertation done by this time next week I think I should get on with that for the next few days, then get back into the documentary editing with a fresh perspective.

Quick update, doc going well. Went to the Dystonia Society offices in London where we got to interview Paul King (Chief Exec) and one of the lovely helpline ladies. Now it’s a case of going through all my footage and transcribing the interviews. Found a great application called ExpressScribe (http://www.nch.com.au/scribe/index.html) that lets me slow the interview right down as I try and type them out. Very helpful as my typing skills will never be able to keep up with my sisters speed talking! Hoping to get that done by the end of this week and be able to work them into an edit script so I will know what extra footage I need to get when my parents visit next week.

Third Year has come and as one of my final projects I have decided to make a short Doc about a condition that my Dad suffers with, called Dystonia. Heard from Paul King today, the Chief Exec. from the Dystonia Society (http://www.dystonia.org.uk) and getting excited about the things I can do with it. Now if only I could get as excited about my dissertation research!

Inception are taking away Cinematography, Sound Edit and Sound Mix, but King’s Speech managed to win Best Film. What does it tell us? You can have the best camera and sound team in the world on board but it takes an outstanding screenplay and ‘talent’ to squeeze it to the top.
